South Africa, August 26, 2023 – President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea delivered a call for global cooperation and the establishment of a just and fair global order during his speech at the BRICS Summit held in South Africa. In a video released by the Eritrean Government, the President is seen making a stinging attack against the US and its allies for impeding efforts to build a more equitable world.
He noted that these efforts have resulted in an endless spiral of conflict and perpetual instability. Afwerki also highlighted the malaise unleashed by US exceptionalism or Pax Americana, which he stated has gravely impaired global progress for nearly a century now. The President highlighted the prevailing deficits of the global governance architecture, whose defining features are dysfunctional, non-inclusive, and unfair rules and regulations, which he deemed too evident to merit emphasis.
In a speech marked by its candid critique of prevailing international dynamics, President Afwerki criticized the consequences of bipolarity and attempts at imposing unipolarity in the past 30 years.
The President firmly pointed out that lofty aspirations of humanity for a world characterized by justice, rule of law, and cooperation have been compromised. Afwerki cautioned against the escalating tensions in Ukraine, underlining the grave consequences such conflicts can entail. He expressed concern over the relentless pursuit of global dominance by certain powers, leading to conflicts in various regions, including Africa and the Middle East. The President decried the extensive use of punitive measures, such as sanctions, by powerful entities against those who do not align with their interests.
“The situation in Eritrea is only symptomatic – symptomatic of modern slavery,” President Afwerki stated, emphasizing the need to rectify systemic injustices and forge a path towards a more equitable world order. He proposed the creation of a consensus-driven approach involving international platforms like BRICS to address such issues comprehensively and sustainably.
Afwerki also discussed the need for fair access to resources and collaboration among nations, highlighting the potential of technological progress to uplift humanity if guided by ethical principles. He stressed the importance of shifting away from power blocs and unilateral actions in favor of collaborative initiatives that respect national sovereignty and social justice.
